Question 2 – Empirical Probability
A research institute conduct a survey of international students
enrolled offshore in higher education programs across major
education sectors. The latest survey was conducted online survey in
2018 and results were summarised in Table. 1 below. ‘Satisfaction’
provides the results in response to the question: “Overall, which
aspects do you satisfy most?” The ‘Total Offshore’ column provides
the aggregate results for all students enrolled from 11
countries.
Nationality
Satisfaction
Malaysia Singapore China Other
Total offshore
Arrival 35 25 38 42 140
Learning 68 54 72 42 236
Living 35 48 45 35 163
Support 42 35 29 20 126 Happiness 53 49 37 31 170 Total 233 211 221
170 835
Answer the following questions using Table. 1, ensuring you show
the probability statement for each part.
a) (2 marks) What is the probability that a survey respondent
choose ‘Happiness’? b) (2 marks) What is the probability that a
survey respondent is from Singapore or his/her answer is
‘Learning’? c) (2 marks) What is the probability that a survey
respondent is from other countries and he/she answer is ‘Support’?
d) (2 marks) What is the probability that a survey respondent is
from Malaysia given his/her answer is ‘Arrival’? e) (4 marks) Are
the two events, ‘Satisfaction’ and ‘Nationality’, statistically
independent? Evaluate using ‘Living’ and ‘China’ categories.
We need at least 10 more requests to produce the answer.
