OB Visit Calendar Assignment

First Trimester (0-12 Weeks):

Schedule/Frequency of office visits: Every 4 weeks or 1 month once until 28 weeks of gestation

Blood & urine testing:

Blood typing and Rh Typing,

Hemoglobin

Additional testing (ex. Genetic screening, ultrasounds etc.): Ultrasound test for fetal nuchal translucency (NT), Pregnancy-associated plasma protein screening (PAPP-A), Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG),

Second Trimester (13-26 Weeks):

Schedule/Frequency of office visits: Every 4 weeks or 1 month once until 28 weeks of gestation

Blood & urine testing: Urinalysis, Test urine for glucose and protein, Glucose tolerance test, blood count, platelet count, RPR test for syphilis, Alpha-fetoprotein screening (AFP), Other markers(hCG, Estriol, Inhibin), amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS)

Additional testing (ex. Genetic screening, ultrasounds etc.): Ultrasound

Third Trimester (27-40 Weeks):

Schedule/Frequency of office visits: Every 2 weeks or 15 days once from 28 Weeks to 36 weeks, then once in week till the delivery

Blood & urine testing: Ultrasound, Glucose screening, Group B strep test,

Additional testing (ex. Genetic screening, ultrasounds etc.): Nonstress test, Contraction stress test.

Nursing interventions/teaching:

  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet, consume a variety of nutritious foods daily
  • Avoid dieting during pregnancy
  • Consume approximately 300 calories more per day than before pregnancy
  • Take an extra 400 mcg of folic acid per day
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking can lead to lower birth weight and increase the chances of preterm labor.
  • Continue to exercise during pregnancy as recommended by the obstetrician
  • Avoid handling raw meat and cat litter.
  • Wear gloves when gardening to prevent contracting toxoplasmosis from animal droppings
  • Avoid douching. Douching during pregnancy increases the risk for bacterial infection.
  • Avoid taking any medication (other than acetaminophen) or over-the-counter unless primary care provider has approved it
