Ocular herpes is an infectious eye disease caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. The common symptoms include - corneal aberration,redness of the eye,sensitivity to the light accompanied by pain.If the infection is penetrated to the deeper layers of the cornea, it can lead to partial vision loss or even complete blindness.The virus can infect either single or both the eyes.Diagnosis of the infection can be done by performing Fluorescein eye stain test.

Ocular herpes is caused by Herpes simplex 1 virus as the tendency of the virus strain 1 to localize on the corneal membrane of eye.On the other hand, In case of an infection with Herpes Simplex Virus -2 , the strain is mostly found inside genitals and thus is responsible for causing genital herpes.
