Answer #1

a) m/z value is 122

b) MS peak at 77 corresponds to benzyl ring C6H5+fragment, 105 corresponds to C6H5-C=O+ fragment and 51 corresponds to C4H3+ fragment

c) From IR spectrum: The sharp peak at 1700 corresponds to vibration of C=O bond connected to an aryl ring. The broad band around ~3200 shows the presence of OH group. The sharp peaks around 730 is characteristic of C-H bending in monosubstitued benzene. Aryl C-H Stretching shows around 3000.

d) From the data from MS and IR it can conclude that the compound is benzoic acid with structure C6H5-CO-OH

provide structures for the spectral data provided Pages 1-5: provide the 5 structures for the spectral data provided. For full credit, you must be sure to assign/label all the NMR peaks and assign the major IR bands including those readily identifiable in the fingerprint region (use the IR spectral tables handed out in class). If you do not label anything on the spectra, you will lose most of the points for this problem set. Hint for the problems listed without...
