Acetone reacts with iodine in acid solution as shown in this equation.

2NO+H2+--->N2O+H2O

These data were obtained when the reaction was studied.

[NO], M [H2], M Relative Rate

0.021 0.065 1.46 M/min

0.021 0.260 1.46 M/min

0.042 0.065 5.84 M/min

What is the rate equation for the reaction?

Answer #1

see experiment 1 and 3:
[NO] doubles
[H2] is constant
rate becomes 4 times
so, order of NO is 2

see experiment 1 and 2:
[NO] is constant
[H2] becomes 4 times
rate is constant
so, order of H2 is 0

overall order = 2 + 0 = 2
Rate law is:
rate = k*[NO]^2
