The Uniform Terminology for Occupational Therapy-Third Edition (American Occupational Therapy Association, 1989b) was published to foster consistency in terminology among occupational therapists. It provides detailed and general descriptions of different definitions and categorizations which would have a wide applicability in the medical and health sector.
Occupational therapy is defined as “the therapeutic use of everyday life activities (occupations) with individ- uals or groups for the purpose of enhancing or enabling participation in roles, habits, and routines in home, school, workplace, community, and other settings.” It was developed with a vision to serve as a common point of interaction and avoid conflicting assessments and opinions in the process of building productive dialogues between different therapists in the field, Occupational therapy practitioners can use the knowl- edge to design occupation -based intervention plans and thus facilitate positive change in client factors such as body functions, body structures, and skills (motor, process, and social interaction). In this way, Occupational therapy services are aimed at providing rehabilitation, and promoting the overall health and well-being of clients whether they are suffering from a disability such as learning disabilities or constraints in motor and cognitive abilities due to major illness, accident, etc.
The outline in the text lists out the different measures by which Occupational therapy practitioners can encourage an active engagement of the client’s through adaptstions and modifications to the environment or objects within the environment when needed so as to build a sustainable support.
