Answer #1

Answer: A chiral centre is defined as an atom in a molecule which is connected to 4 different substituents.

Here in this molecule we see that first and the third carbon is attached to four different species. So, the molecule has 2 chiral centres.

Despite having 2 chiral centres the molecule is achiral because there is a plane of symmetry present. If we draw a plane which is bisecting the second carbon atom, we find that either sides of the plane are identical (since both the methyl groups are poining outwards, we can draw a plane). Therefore the molecule is achiral.

So, cis-1,3-dimethylcyclopentane has 2 chiral centres and is achiral.
