A steam power plant is intended to be used for heating as well as power generation. The net power required from this installation is 5 MW and the heating power is 12 MW. While the steam produced at 4 MPa, 440 degrees Celsius in the boiler expands in the isentropic turbine, the steam to be used in heating is drawn from the turbine at 140 kPa and it is condensed in the heating installation and mixed with water from the condenser with a pressure reducer after cooling down to 40 degrees Celsius. In addition, intermediate steam is taken at 0.4 MPa to be sent to ten mixed mixtures. The pumps are isentropic and the condenser temperature is 40 degrees Celsius.

a) Calculate the flow rate of the steam used for heating.

b) Find the flow rate of the steam and intermediate steam produced in the boiler.

C) Calculate the heat given in the boiler and the heat taken from the condenser at once.

A cogeneration plant is similar to a power plant, but some of the thermal energy in the working fluid is used for process heat (for example heating buildings, steel making, or oil refining). An ideal reheat Rankine cycle with regeneration is modified to a cogeneration plant by adding a process heater as shown in the figure below. The process heater acts as a heat removal step where the enthalpy of the steam is reduced by the heat output (qprocess=h7-h3). The...

    1. An industrial plant needs 20,000 lbm of saturated steam at 280°F per hour for heating purposes and ten MW of electrical power. A small turbine system is to be designed to handle both of these needs. Steam is supplied to a turbine at 400 psia pressure from a boiler and expanded until 280°F saturated steam is obtained whereupon the steam needed for heating is extracted. The rest of the steam is expanded in a second turbine to a condenser...
