Cells of hypoxia tolerant organisms have the capacity of hypometabolism means they can down regulate the metabolism, they have strong defence for antioxidant, they can express cell protective protein more efficiently like heat shock proteins, they can activate reactive oxygen stress tolerance mechanism hence they have nice recovery on reoxygenation. They can maintain neuronal function for days as they have low levels of excitatory neurotransmitters like dopamine and glutamate and high levels of inhibitors neurotransmitters like GABA.
