Question

Check the stability of the foundation against B.C failure

A column foundation 1.2 ×1.6 m placed at a depth of 1.2 m. The column of 0.4 × 0.4 m is subjected to a moment in direction of least dimension of the base of (145) kNm and to vertical load of 950 kN. The soil has a unit weight of 16.8 kN/m3 , saturated unit weight of 18.8 kN/m3 , cohesion of 10 kN/m2 and a friction angle of 26o . the water table located at a depth of 2.0 m. Problem 3: 40 points) A square foundation was decided to be constructed to support the load of a column in a residential building construction project located in Claremont, CA. During the site investigation, only sandy soil (c'= 0) was encountered. The ground water was observed at the depth 1.2m from ground level. Obtained samples were tested in the lab and the internal friction angle of the soil was found to be equal to 30°. The unit weight of the soil...

Problem 5-Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundation (20 pts) For a square footing foundation, the following are given: B 3.0 m (width), D 1.2 m (depth). Y=20 kN/m3, = 32°, c' = 50 kPa, Use Terzaghi Equation and a factor of safety of 2.5 to determine the allowable bearing capacity and the maximum column load to cause bearing capacity failure. Assume that general shear failure occurs in soil. When Oar C S

The following case study involving a failure in fissured over-consolidated clay slope was reported by Henkel and Skempton in 1954. The failure occurred in 1952 in Jackfield, Shropshire, England. The slope profile is shown in Figure 1. The failure was a translational slide where the average depth to the failure plane was 17 ft. The ground water table was very near or at the surface. The peak strength parameters of the over-consolidated clay are: cohesion, c'= 220 psf and friction...

It is required to design a cantilever retaining wall to retain a 5.0 m high sandy backfill. The consultant suggests the dimensions and soil properties shown in Figure P17.6 and requires that the wall be checked for stability with respect to sliding and overturning based on the active earth pressures determined using 0.5 mm 110° EDT Sand y = 18.5 kN/m3 6' = 36°...
