Question

Genetic protocol

A local hospital receives a request from a local business for medical information on Mrs. Jones.  Mrs. Jones has applied for a job with the business, and the business has made an offer pending medical clearance.  All the proper authorizations have been received at the hospital for the release of the information.

Mrs. Jones has been healthy and had only one brief hospital stay that was a result of minor injuries sustained in a car accident.  However, during this hospital stay, her attending physician documents a family history of breast cancer.  It is also documented that Mrs. Jones had participated in a genetics research protocol and that the genetic test indicated an alteration in the BRCA 1 gene, meaning she is at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

In your opinion, if the hospital releases this information to the requesting business, what are some positive and negative outcomes that could come from this information?  Also, in your opinion should the business be able to receive this information?  Why or why not?

Keep in mind that everyone is entitled to their opinion.  We may not all agree with these opinions but we should keep an open mind.  Support your argument.
