Using examples, explore whether or not we need to fundamentally reassess the role and purpose of business schools.

The importance of business schools has been seen with doubt in recent times. Especially, when globally their fees are exorbitantly high which leaves a huge debt on students when they graduate. If they are not lucky enough and did not get a good package and a job, upon graduating, this burden of debt can be a reason for their anxiety. This becomes worse in times, where employers look for the skills and not credentials while hiring for the jobs. That is the reason, chemical engineers are becoming financial analysts and history graduates are running a business. The importance of business school thus becomes a point of contention because if a management role can be pursued with skills then why to invest a huge sum and a considerable time in gaining the credentials.

The world has been striving hard to provide quality education to all, through its online channels. A curious student can nowadays get the best learning in almost all subjects, no matter where he is located physically. Education has also become affordable with these channels.

The question has gained further attention, given the situation of COVID-19 and worldwide closure of colleges. Now, most schools and colleges are running classes online to keep students safe at home. And many students of these B-schools are asking for a refund of their fees as according to them, online teaching does not justify the fees. Even when the teachers are giving the same lectures and advanced technology giving a chance to participate in case discussions, there is something missing for the students. So, what actually are business schools providing to its student for fees that go north of a hundred thousand dollars.

According to many students, their purpose of joining an esteemed college is to grow their network, get a reputed degree, and alma mater on their resume and peer learning. As teacher's lectures are made available online, thus, the importance of it for the students is declining. This goes without saying that a major part of the component in fees is tuition fees which makes up the high salary of teachers and professors. Hence, the question arises that in the era of various MOOCs coming into the picture and best teacher and teaching made available at negligible prices, is it justifiable to charge such a high fee for education when students mostly arrive there to make connections and learn from peers. Is there a need to reassess the role of business schools? Yes, there is a need and it should be in accordance with the expectations of the student and industry. The education curriculum must include more practical exposure and fewer lectures. There must be a value proposition that is not achievable through online media. The fees must also be reduced in order to put a lesser strain on students
