I like your list of 'missed" opportunities for these organizations. When it comes down to the reason, were they all lacking in consideration of what the competition or external environment was?

There are companies like Blockbuster that made choices that were not as successful as they thought would be. Some of the examples of such companies are as follows:

Atari: It was the company which was specialized in the video games, home computers, and arcade games. It faced competition from the Intellivision. The company Atari did not deal with its competitors in the positive way, rather it decided to sue the companies that came in its way with the thought of cutting down the competition. Thus, the entire focus shifted towards it and the company failed to keep the quality of the video game with the latest technology.

Compaq: Compaq was the company whose operation was to develop, sell and support the computer and its related services and products. Having the desktop computer of Compaq was a status symbol in those days. The company faced a tight competition from the rivalry companies in the market. The Compaq faced difficulty in maintaining the price wars against the dell and thus it was unable to withstand the competition. It failed to develop any strategy against it.

Borders: It was an international music and book retailer and it was founded by two brothers. The border was unable to adjust itself with the online books and new digital business environment. The wrong decision was taken to included holding too much debt, entering into the business of e-reader late and opening too many stores which were not necessary. All these factors lead to its failure.
