Correlated group t test are considered more powerful than independent t-tests because using the same participants or item eliminates variation between the samples that could be caused by anything other than what's being tested.

The greater the correlation, the more power we have.

Carryover (or residual) effect is defined as the effect of the treatment from the previous time period on the response at the current time period. It occurs when the effect of a treatment given in the first time period persists into the second period and distorts the effect of the second treatment.
