Question

36. In the diagram below of a periodic table, (a) clearly indicate how the periodic trends i.e., increasing or decreasing, in atomic size, electron affinity, ionization energy, and metallic character change along the directions indicated by the arrows: (b) circle the regions where the elements with the highest ionization energy are found and that in which the largest elements are located. Place your answers to the right of, and below, the gram 37. Ionic compounds typically form between metals and Based on what you know about periodic trends in ionization energy and electron affinity, explain why this combination results in cations and anions that form ionic compounds.

Answer #1

Q 37. Metals have a low ionization energy (they are present on the left hand side of the table) where as non-metals have high electron affinity (capture electron) as they are right hand side of the periodic table. Thus metals can loose electron to form cations easily whereas non-metals can capture electrons to form anions easily. When they combine they form ionic compounds.

The reactivity of the alkali metals increase going down the group; however, the reactivities of the halogens decrease going down the group. Why do the reactivities of these two groups differ? Hints: think about the ionization energy and electron affinity trends, and think about how cations and anions form.
