a) E(X) = 1 * 0.3 + 2 * 0.4 + 3 * 0.2 + 4 * 0.1 = 2.1

b) E(X2) = 1^2 * 0.3 + 2^2 * 0.4 + 3^2 * 0.2 + 4^2 * 0.1 = 5.3

V(X) = (E(X)2) - (E(X))^2

       = 5.3 - (2.1)^2

      = 0.89
