A drug company wanted to test the effectiveness of a new pain reliever for people who suffer from migraine headaches. They selected a random sample of 400 people who suffer from migraine headaches and gave 200 of them the new pain reliever; the other 200 were given a placebo (i.e., a sugar pill that appeared in all respects identical to the new pain reliever). After one month, people in both groups were asked to report if the pill they took provided them with satisfactory relief from the pain of their headaches. Of the 200 people who took the sugar pills, 44 reported that they had experienced satisfactory relief; and, of the 200 people taking the new pain reliever, 75 said they experienced satisfactory relief.
