Supply chain management is the broad range of activities required to plan, control and execute a product's flow from materials to production to distribution in the most economical way possible.

Strategic responsibility is about broad, long-term goals; Tactical covers the big projects or activities that moves the organisation toward achieving those goals; and Operational activities are the day-to-day processes that achieve the tactical objectives.

Configuration of network and facilities is done keeping in mind broad, long-term goals whereas vendor sourcing and transportation planning help in achieving the long term goals. Operational planning and Inventory management are day to day processes that achieve tactical objectives.
