A child swinging on a swingset with chains of length l wants to swing and jump off the swing to get as far as possible. The child isn't being pushed.

At what angle θ should the child let go of the swing to maximize the landing distance and what is the distance jumped as a function of θ?

Hints: Model swinging using simple pendulum and jumping using projectile motion.

Find equations for speed and height as functions of the swing angle and then a range equation.

Note: The answer is not 45 degrees as the launch is from above the ground level!

  • HotWheels Launch Angle

HotWheels Launch Angle IntroductionIn this lab you are going to use the HotWheels Launcher and a ramp. The orange Hotwheels car launcher is a variable speed launch system with four settings.  This makes it ideal for experiments to see the effects of velocity on projectile motion.  You are going to launch a car with two different initial velocities at an angle and measure how far it lands. From the input data you can determine the initial velocity. Items needed:             Measuring...

I am confused here Suppose a baseball player throws a ball. When she releases the ball, her hand is 1 meter above the ground, and the ball leaves her hand at 18 m/s in a direction that makes a 32° angle with the horizontal. Please help with Q1 a)b)c). Question 1: In the lectures we considered simple projectile motion. Here we extend the description to include air resistance. For macroscopic objects in air, the dynamics equations including air resistance may be written V and ^- where m is the mass of the object, g is the acceleration due to gravity, y is the vertical direction, C is a dimensionless drag coefficient, A is the cross-sectional area of the object, pa 1.2kg/m3 is the density...
