A stereotype refers to a fixed general image about specific types of individuals or certain ways of behaving intended to represent the entire group of those individuals or behaviors as a whole. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect reality. For example, the problem of gendered occupational segregation that shapes our expectations about whether a man or a woman is a better “fit” for a given job. These stereotypes influence the chances that a man or a woman will be hired, the pay each would receive and even performance evaluations that determine promotions.
