Insult; is simply the act of putting someone down or humiliating some. It is not an act to invalidate or refute a claim or argument.

Ad Hominem refers to an argument style; based on some personal characteristic of the person making the claim; hence it is an attempt to invalidate a claim, statement, or argument. For example, when we say, "She would not say this if she were not so tired" it is an ad hominem argument.
