Recently, fashion designers in Europe banned supermodels in runway who were underweight.What do you think we can do to get the message across as it relates to this deadly epidemic of eating disorders? Anorexia is an eating disorder in which people don’t eat because they fear of becoming fatty. Due to decreased food intake, the intestinal musculature undergoes atrophy and the digestive capabilities decrease. The food stays in the intestine for more period than the usual, which causes intestinal bloating.
The exact cause of the disease is not known, but the genetics play some role. The stress factors and the low self-esteem about the physic, etc. are the other common causes. Increased secretion of leptin causes early satiety and Ghrelin (appetite stimulating hormone) secretion decreases.
Believing thin skin as a measure of beauty or low weight as a measure of beauty and low-self esteem about the physic is the key contributor of spreading eating disorders. Media plays a key role in defining the definition of beauty. As the media presents thin skin or low body weight as beauty, people would like to follow that trend in the name of fashion.
So, media must play a key role in creating awareness among the people regarding the importance of healthy food, healthy body weight, and consequences of low body weight.
