Answer #1

Binomial distribution: P(X) = nCx px qn-x

n = 10

p = 0.5

q = 1 - 0.5 = 0.5

P(X = 5) = 10C5 x 0.55 x 0.55

= 0.246

Normal approximation: P(X < A) = P(Z < (A - mean)/standard deviation)

mean = np

= 10 x 0.5

= 5

Standard deviation = \sqrt{npq}

= (10x0.5x0.5)0.5

= 1.58

P(X = 5) = P(4.5 < X < 5.5)

= P(X < 5.5) - P(X < 4.5)

= P(Z < (5.5 - 5)/1.58) - P(Z < (4.5 - 5)/1.58)

= P(Z < 0.316) - P(Z -0.316)

= 0.6240 - 0.3760

= 0.248

Ans: 0.246; 0.248
