An airplane trip involves three legs with two stopovers. The first leg is due west for 620km; the second leg is 30o SE for 440km: and the third leg is at 53o SW for 550 km. The trip started at 3:15 PM and ended at 8:45 PM .

Answer #1

Here, D1 = - 620 i      km

=> D2 =   (440 * cos30 i - 400 * sin30 j) km

             = (381.051 i - 200 j) km

=> D3 =   (-550 * cos53 i - 550 * sin53 j) km

            = ( - 331 i - 439.25 j) km

=>   D = D1 + D2 + D3

             = (- 569.95 i - 639.25 j) km

=> total displacement magnitude = 856.43 km

=> average velocity =   856.43/5.5

                                   = 155.71 km/hr

=> direction = tan-1(639.25/569.95)

                     = 48.28 degree   in SW direction .
