Answer #1

DDT is a chemical pesticide used to kill mosquitoes. Its use began in World War II era and was used extensively in developed countries. In 1972, US banned its use because of research which suggested its side effects in human beings including the role in cancer. Most developed countries followed suit and stopped usage of DDT.But in Sub-Saharan Africa, Malaria remains a huge healthcare hazard. Other pesticides have developed resistance and hence they reverted to use of DDT in recent years. The argument given by African countries is that the benefit offered by DDT in controlling mosquitoes outweighs its side effects. WHO ahs also allowed usage of DDT solely for malaria control.
