Answer #1

One of the main sources of heating for the atmosphere is the ground surface. When the ground surface releases heat, atmosphere gets heated and temperature increases. As we rise through the atmosphere, layers of the atmosphere get away from the ground surface and thus from the source of heat. This causes a decrease in temperature with gaining altitude. Sometimes this situation is reversed and temperature increases with altitude. This phenomenon is called temperature inversion.
Land surface is more prone to lose heat than water or atmosphere. In the night time, when there are no source of heat for the ground to gain heat, it loses heat faster than the atmosphere or water surface. This causes the temperature of the ground to fall rapidly in the night. Atmospheric layer close to the ground gets cold too. Whereas the upper layers of the atmosphere can not lose heat that efficiently and remains warmer than the surface layer. This causes temperature inversion and temperature increases with altitude.
