Direct manipulation can be considered as a significant achievement of Human-Computer Interaction. Examples of direct manipulation applications are word processing & spreadsheet. They have ability to display final form on-screen, moving the cursor through arrow keys, and watch action results immediately and easy reversal of commands. Office automation makes use of Direct manipulation like:

  • Xerox Star - High resolution, multiple fonts, graphics, sophisticated formatting of text, interface-based cursor.
  • Apple Lisa - Macintosh precursor, pull-down menu, dragging icons, multiple window manipulation, and text & graphics ending.
