If C4 photosynthesis reduces photorespiration, why isn't this pathway adaptive in all environments? Are there disadvantages to the C4 pathway?
Ans.
Actually to do this, C4 needs an enzyme called RuBisCO in the process of photo respiration. But this enzyme works in the environment where already there is huge amount of Carbon dioxide while very small amount of Oxygen. Thus, this is not adaptive to all the environment.
DISADVANTAGES
There are no very significant disadvantage of C4 but it is not very efficient in cool and moist climate. One of the disadvantage I have already mentioned that it needs a special kind of environment which is not always possible. Thus, most of the plants do C3 photosynthesis.
I hope the answer is clear to you now, in case you need further help, please leave a comment, we will try our best to fix it for you. Goodluck

Photorespiration causes a plant to lose 25% of the carbon fixed, so C4 plants are much more efficient. Why aren't C4 plants more widespread? What kinds of environments would you expect to find them?
X 45. Because of C4 photosynthesis's ability to reduce photorespiration, all plants will evolve into C4 plants in the future. True False 46. Glycolysis produces the same amount of ATP during anaerobic fermentation that the Citric Acid Cycle does during aerobic cellular respiration. True False 47. As long a light is available, plants can meet their ATP needs through photosynthesis instead of through aerobic cellular respiration. True False 48. Non-competitive inhibition is a more effective way to completely stop a...
Why does C4 photosynthesis result in less water loss than C3 photosynthesis?
What is Kranz anatomy and why is it important for C4 photosynthesis?
5. Photosynthetic adaptations to extreme environments Aa Aa Rubisco carries out photorespiration when the ratio of O2 to CO2 is too high. As a result, certain plants have adaptations meant to keep this ratio low in tissue locations where their photosynthetic cells need to use Rubisco. The following image describes how when these two sets of events occu plants prevent photorespiration.
