In solar Astronomy the standard unit of measurement for distance is the Astronomical Unit which is the average distance from the Earth to the Sun ( 1 1.5 10 ) 8 AU =  km . In stellar Astronomy the distances are so large, that the standard units of length are the Light Year (LY) or the Parsec. A light year is the distance traveled by light in one year, know that light travels 300000 km per second in empty space and that 1 year has 365 days, determine:

a. The distance to Alpha Centaury C in kilometers, the closest star to our solar system which is a distance of 4.26 light years

b. Determine the same distance in AU

Answer #1

a) 1 LY =9.461e+12 km

Alpha Centaury is at a distance 4.26 LY= 4.0303e+13 =41.32 trillion km

b) 1 LY = 63241.1 au

distance to Alpha Centaury = 269407 au

    f) in vacuum, light travels at about 186,282 miles per second. One mile is about 161 kilometers (km). Astronomers prefer to use units of distance that are reasonable in describing how far objects are from Earth. For example, for distances in the solar system we use the astronomical unit (AU), which is equal to the average distance of Earth from the Sun; 1 AU is about 150 million km. For distances to stars and galaxies, astronomers use the light-year (1...

A parsec is an astronomical unit of distance where 1 parsec = 3.26 light years (1 light year equals the distance traveled by light in one year). If the speed of light is 186,000 mi/s, calculate the distance in meters of an object that travels 3.9 parsecs.

    a) Using s = rθ, calculate the arc length (in meters) subtended by the sun when it moves an angular distance of 2 x10-6 °. The distance between the Earth and Sun is called an AU (astronomical unit). 1 AU = 1.5 x1011 m. (Don’t forget to convert to radians). As you can see from the above calculation, a small change in angle can correspond to a large distance. In astronomy angles are typically measured in arcminutes or arcseconds 1...

    1. Alpha Centauri is the closest star system to our Solar System at a distance of 4.37 light-years. The velocity of light is 3.00 x108 m/s and a light year is defined as the distance light travels in 1 year. Calculate the distance in kilo meters (km) from Alpha Centauri to our Solar System in Scientific Notation format with the correct number of significant figures.

How far away from the model star would you have to be for the distances in the system to be to scale? Express your answer in meters and kilometers.   From the correctly scaled distance, could we actually see the planet as it moves in front of the...

    A. The Sun travels in a circular orbit at a velocity of 220 km/second at a distance of 8.0 kiloparsecs from the center of the Galaxy (note that these numbers are slightly different from those in your book). Calculate the number of years it takes the Sun to complete an orbit (i.e., the circumference of a circle with an 8.0 kiloparsec radius) around the center of the Galaxy.
