Bt corn is one of the largest modern grain crops in North America. Explain how corn plants are transformed with the Bacillus thuringiensis gene. What are the potential impacts of Bt corn on individual agricultural ecosystems and on the broader global ecosystem?
In the production of Bt corn, corn plants are genetically engineered by using Cry1Ab gene was isolate from Bacillus thuringensis and transformed into corn plant using agrobacterium mediated transformation. Agrobacterium involves in the process of transfer our gene of interest into the plants through T DNA insertion process and the gene is integrated into the plant genome.
By using this Bt corn, we can reduce the use of broad spectrum insecticides which causes halmful effect to the environment like contamination of water, decreased potential of soil, and to the nontarget organisms.
One of the major ecological concerns given studies that Cry1 Ab adversely affected the predaceous lacewing Chrysoperla carnea reared on Bt corn-fed prey larvae.
Horizontal gene transfer is one of the impact not only through sexual nut also ny non-sexual mechanisms. This gene flow causes spread the Bt gene and enhances weediness of certain corn relatives which could lead to loss of biodiversity.
