An orderly is pushing a gurney with a patient on it. The mass of the orderly is 85 kg, the mass of the gurney is 20 kg, and the mass of the patient is 50 kg. The orderly exerts a backward force of 100 N on the floor. What acceleration is produced, assuming the friction in the wheels is negligible?

Answer #1

total force on the system = 100 N

total mass of the system = 85 + 20 + 50

= 155 kg

acceleration = F/m

= 100 / 155 = 0.645 m/s^2

so the acceleration produced = 0.645 m/s^2

    A 1290 -kg car is pushing an out-of-gear 2140 -kg truck that has a dead battery. When the driver steps on the accelerator, the drive wheels of the car push horizontally against the ground with a force of 4600 N . The rolling friction of the car can be neglected, but the heavier truck has a rolling friction of 770 N , including the "friction" of turning the truck's drivetrain. Two crates, of mass m1= 50 kg and m2= 100 kg, are in contact and at rest on a horizontal surface. Force F= 600 N is exerted on the 50-kg crate. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.20. A) determine the acceleration of the system. B) determine the magnitude of the force that each crate exerts on the other.
