Intrafusal muscles are innervated by two axons, one sensory and one motor. They are actually innervated by gamma motor neurons and beta motor neurons. Unlike the alpha motor neurons, gamma motor neurons do not directly adjust the lengthening or shortening of muscles which is required for the working of intrafusal muscles. Their role is important in keeping muscle spindles taut. Beta motor neurons innervate intrafusal fibres of muscle spindles with collaterals to extrafusal fibres - a type of slow twitch fiber.

Extrafusal muscle fibres are the skeletal standard muscle fibres that are innervated by alpha motor neurons as it has to generate tension by contracting, allowing for skeletal movement which is the main function of extrafusal muscle.
