Answer #1

R =9400 km , M =6.4*10^23 kg , G =6.67*10^-11 N .m^2/kg^2

From Keplers third law

T^2 = (4pi^2/GM)R^3

T^2 = (4*3.14*3.14*(9400*1000)^3)/(6.67*10^-11*6.4*10^23)

T =27701.2 s

T = 7.695 hours

    3. Mars has two moons, Deimos and Phobos, traveling in circular orbits (to a good approximation) Deimos takes 30.3 hours to orbit Mars (i.e. 30.3 hours per full rotation around the planet) and travels with a speed of 1.35 km/s. [16 points] a) What is the radius of Deimos' orbit around Mars? [9] Hint: First find the circumference of Deimos' orbit. Then infer the radius from that.] b) What is the magnitude and direction of Deimos' acceleration? [7]

    Phobos is one of two small moons that orbit Mars. Phobos is a very small moon and has correspondingly small gravity-- it varies but a typical value is about 6mm/s^2. Phobos isn't quite round, but it has an average radius of about 11 km. What would be the orbital speed around Phobos, assuming it was round with gravity and radius as noted?
