A gene is the region of DNA which encodes heritable trait. A gene is the basic unit of hereditary in living organisms. A gene comprises short regions of DNA which encodes for a particular protein.

Gene can acquire mutation in their sequence leading to different variants called alleles in the population. Alleles may be more than two in number in population but in an individual they cannot be usually more than two.

Gene is first transcribed into mRNA then it is translated into protein. Thus gene is expressed.
