Patient autonomy is nothing but it is the right of the patient to make decision or choices by themself or it is the self determination of the patient to choose whatever is right to them regarding the health care.As an health care personnel we have to respect the rights of the patient and participate them in making their own decision or choices
From the readings of the Kaebnicks and Kant's they are respecting the patient identity. In some if the patient is unable to take their own decisions or patient is in coma or very critical we can go for a substituted judgement for this. Here instead of patient the family members and doctors try to make decision or we can go for a best interest judgement.
Best interest are other wise called informed consent. It is nothing but it is the guiding principle for decision making on behalf of incapacitated patients. It is nothing but an subjective and objective evaluation regarding health care
As a nurse educator i support for the informed consent. Here we are getting full permission granted from the patient after explaining the benefits and consequences of a treatment or any procedure
"A patient refusal to accept vaccination"
A patient have the full right to make their own decision but as a nurse educator we have to educate the patient regarding the benefits and possible consequences if they avoid the vaccination
Informed Cosent
Informed consent is the full granted permission from the patient to start a treatment or procedure after explaining the benefits and potential cosequences. Here we are giving voluntary choice to the patient to make decision. Here the patient is having full right to accept the treatment or avoid it after disclosure full procedure to the patient,or simply we can say that the voluntary willingness of the patient to continue the treatment or not .
If we are selecting a patient who is coming with appendicitis which is very serious, here we can see how the informed consent is useful. After all the physical examination, lab investigations, and other diagnostic test we will informed the patient regarding the stage of appendicitis, what are the treatment options available in this stage, and the consequences they will face if they are not treating it properly. After the full explanation or education they must gain the knowledge regarding the condition and posible consequences if they are not treating it properly. In this case most them are willing for the care to avoid the complications. Here in this case we can see how informed consent is beneficial.
