the world’s three biggest healthcare spenders are Norway, Switzerland and the United States– paying $9,715 per person (9.6% of GDP), $9,276 per person (11.5% of GDP), and $9,146 per person (17.1% of GDP) respectively. Different countries health systems are managing to achieve similar or better results for far less.Government spending accounts for more than 80 percent of all health care spending.

What does an efficient health system have?

- A strong primary care system.

- Technology to contain costs.

In terms of tehnology Canadians are sacrificing access to modern medical technology for first dollar coverage for primary care.  Hospitals also have less high technology diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical equipment than is available in the typical urban hospital in the United States. Germany has 22.6 percent fewer MRI units per million compared to the United States. The one area where Germany has more technology is CT scanners, where they have 17.1 per million population compared to 13.7 per million in the United States . The advanced state of technology is the greatest strength of the U.S. health care system.
