Answer #1

Answer: C6H15O6

Solution

We can determine the molecular formula using emperical formula in 3 steps

Step 1) determine molar mass of C2H5O2

C = 2 x (12 g/mol) = 24 g/mol

H = 5 x (1 g/mol) = 5 g/mol

O = 2 x (16 g/mol) = 32 g/mol

Total mass of C2H5O2 = 24 g/mol + 5 g/mol + 32 g/mol = 61 g/mol

Step 2) Ratio of the element

Molar mass / emperical mass = (183.2 g/mol) / (61 g/mol) = 3

Step 3) multiply Ratio of element and Emperical formula to find molecular formula

3 x C2H5O2 = C6H15O6
