The empirical formula for a given compound can be defined as the formula in which the atoms are in simplest whole number ratios .

For example let us consider a compound having formula C4H8 . The empirical formula of the given compound is CH2 ( The simplest whole number ratio of C and H is 1 : 2 .

Similarly C6H12O6 and H2O2 are not empirical formulas as the simplest whole number ration of the atoms in these compounds are not mentained .

Empirical formulas : PF3 , CO2 and NaCl .

Not empirical formulas : C4H8 , C6H12O6 and H2O2 .
