Answer #1

Solution:

1. Which of the above chemicals would you expect to reacts with metal?

Answer: 10% phosphoric acid reacts with metals such as Aluminium and Iron to release hydrogen gas, which is flammable.

Petroleum ether do not react with metal and metal container can resist the pressure genrated due petroleum ether.

2. Which of the above chemicals would not be stored in plastic container?

Answer: A petroleum ether is not usually stored in plastic container as it is highly volatile and plastic material not able to resistant for the pressure generated inside an as result of this plastic material gets swallowed.

However, 10% phosphoric acid do not reacts with most of rigid plastics materials and it can be stored in plastic containers. It cannot be stored in metal container as it can corrode metal.

3. Describe the importance of proper PPE as it relates to the 10% phosphoric acid and Petroleum ether

Answer:

10% phosphoric acid: It causes severe skin burns and eye damage, thermal decomposition of phosphoric acid generates corrosive vapours. Therefore, a proper PPE such as protective gloves, protective clothing [fire proof aprons], eye protection [safety glasses], face protection [full mask] is must.

Petroleum ether: As petroleum ether is low boiling liquid and volatile thus it can catch fire immediately. This chemical is also sensitive to static discharge. Therefore while handling this chemical, Protective eyewear, hand gloves, clothing’s and safety shoes are must.
