Activating group are those which increases electron density in aromatic ring. So they activate ring for electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. +M , +H and +I group are activating group.

Deactivating group deactivate ring for electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. -M , -H and -I groups are deactivating group.
