However, it also contains two lone-pairs along with it which forces the O atom to attain a tetrahedral geometry as shown in the figure above. From this information we might be tempted to say that the angle between C-O-H would be the same as that of a regular tetrahedron i.e. 109.50. Note that the lone-pair-lone-pair (Up-Ip) repulsion on the O atom will be greater than that of bond- pair-bond-pair (bp-bp) repulsions (as depicted in the figure above). It is known that if a H atom is bonded to a strongly electronegative atom (Nitrogen, Fluorine or Oxygen) it can form hydrogen bonds. Since both H2O and CzH5OH have an OH group they can form hydrogen bonds with each other.
