Answer #1

Answer – We are given the 3-pentanone and hydrazine and asked for the step by step reaction mechanism.

We know when ketone reacts with hydrazine then there is the formation of product hydrazone and this reaction type is called nucleophilic addition reaction. The hydrazine acts as a nucleophile and gets added across the carbonyl group (C=O) of the ketone. This reaction also called Wolf-Kishner reaction.

The formation of hydrazone is the first step of Wolf-Kishner reaction and the second step is this hydrazone reacts with KOH and heat give the alkane as the product.

The reaction mechanism for hydrazone –

H LI H IN-NH + HN_NH, hydrazine pen tan-3-one NH2 IN H20 + 1-(pentan-3-ylidene)hydrazine (Hydrazone)
