I am trying to figure out the starting materials, solvent, and reagent to form the product methyl-2-methyl-3-oxobutanoate. I can choose from the following starting materials: Methyl acetate, Methyl propionate, and 1,7-Dimethyl-heptanedioate. I can choose EtOH or Et2O as a solvent. I can choose the reagents listed in the picture provided. Which would be best to make the desired product and what would the mechanism be?
