Ferric Chloride test is used for the phenolic - OH group test.

If there is phenolic OH group in the sample then a violet or green coloured precipitate or solution will be observed. It is also used for the conformity test for phenolic OH group.

The complex compound which is responsible for this green or violet precipitate is [Fe(O-Ph)6]3-
