Calculation of Degree of unsaturation for C4H8O2

For C4 saturated hydrogens = 10 H

For C4 molecular formula hydrogens = 8H

Degree of unsaturatation = 10H-8H/2

= 1

It indicates molecule has one double bond.

Based on given proton NMR the probable structure is methylpropanoate

(CH3-CH2-CO-OCH3)

It consists of three types of protons which are lavlabel as a,b,c

CH3(a)-CH2(b)-CO-OCH3(c)

Type a

Integration 3H

Multiplicity triplet

Chrmical shift value 1.1 ppm

Type b

Integration 2H

Multiplicity quatret

Chemicalshift value 2.4 ppm

Type C

Integration 3H

Multiplicity singlet

Chemical shift value 3.6 ppm

IR SPECTRUM

an absorption band (sharp) is observed at 1740 cm^-1 due to C=O stretching.

An absorption band at 1050 cm^-1 due to C-O stretching.
