IUPAC name of BaI​​​​2 is barium iodide. This can be written based on some rules. BaI​​​​2 is an ionic compound in which barium act as cation (positive charge) and Iodine exist as anion (negetive charge). According to nomenclature rules,

* For the single atom type anions, name of anion consist of "ide" as suffix. Here Iodine is the anion, so name of anionic part become iodide.

* For an ionic compound, name is given such that name of cation followed by the name of anion. Here cation is barium , so the name of the given salt is barium iodide.
