Answer #1

They to CH t-pentylalcohol tert-Pentyl Chloside 6) molar 88.2 gloma 1 lobglmol man mass: lom{X0.805g, th my 8.05g ! B6: 2g al

1. Hydrochloric acid generates nucleophile, Cl- which attacks alcohol and gives desired product.

2. Addition of HCl generates excess pressure. So, to avoid bumping of cap or damage to separatory funnel, it is kept open to release pressure smoothly.

3. We will drop a pinch of NaCl. If its goes directly at bottom, that means bottom layer is aqueous. If it stays at top layer, implies top layer is aqueous.

This is based on the fact that, NaCl being an ionic compound, is soluble in polar solvent like Water.

4. FALSE

tert-butyl chloride is not able to form H-Bond with water. It contains larger non-polar alkyl part, which is hydrophobic.

5. NaHCO3

THIS is added to neutralize any excess acid present in the solution.

6.They to CH t-pentylalcohol tert-Pentyl Chloside 6) molar 88.2 gloma 1 lobglmol man mass: lom{X0.805g, th my 8.05g ! B6: 2g al

Provide a flow chart detailing the acid/base extraction/separation of the compounds show below. Your answer must employ the following reagents: methylene chloride, hydrochloric acid (1M & 6M), sodium hydroxide (1M & 6M), 10% sodium bicarbonate (aq). Clearly indicate the product(s) and layers formed following each step of your separation scheme. IMPORTANT: p-cresol is soluble in sodium hydroxide solution but insoluble in neutral water or sodium bicarbonate solution. 2-ethylbenzoic acid is soluble in both sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate solutions.
