Generally, mutations result in reducedprotein function or no protein function. A mutation that results in no protein function is called a null mutation. A null mutation in a gene that usually encodes a specific enzyme leads to the production of a nonfunctional enzyme or no enzyme.

DNA repair is an important way in which the body protects itself from disease. Once DNA damage has given rise to a mutation, the mutation cannot be repaired. So, DNA repair processes exist in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

A gene mutation is a permanent alteration in the DNA sequence .

The mutagen produces mutations in the DNA, and deleterious mutation can result in aberrant, impaired or loss of function for a particular gene. Environmental mutagens may be carcinogens also( Reactive Oxygen Species, UV ray etc).

Homologous recombination is a type of geneticrecombination in which nucleotide sequences are exchanged between two similar or identical molecules of DNA.
