Located on the outer layer of the right atrium, the SA node (bundle of nerve cells) undersgoes spontaneous depolarization (contraction) to generate an action potential. The conducting tissue, also known as the AV node receives this action potential and passes it on through the bundle of His, then the left and right bundle branches and then the Purkinje fibres. All these tissues cause the contraction (depolarization) of the ventricular muscle cells.
