THE OVERALL REACTION OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Why is the following reaction incorrect:

6CO2 + 6 H2O + energy from the sun ----> C6H12O6 + 6O2

a) a product is missing

b) a reactant is missing

c) CO2 does not directly interact with water

Answer #1

Answer : The chemical equation stated in the question is incorrect because a reactant is missing.

Explanation : Chlorophyll is missing. Chlorophyll plays vital role in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis takes place in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll catalyse the chemical reaction acting in concert with other pigment, suger, lipid, nucleic acids etc. So, it is necessary to state chlorophyll in the chemical equation of photosynthesis.

Point to be noted : The above alluded answer is provided in accordance to the question. But there are some points that must be noted. The chemical equation which is given in the question is a simplified form of the actual reaction of photosynthesis. The actual reaction is 6CO2 + 12H20 + Energy from the sun ........(Chlorophyll)........> C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 6O2. To simply this reaction, the common 6 molecules of H2O from the reactant and the product has been removed. So, now the equation becomes 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy from the sun .........(Chlorophyll).........> C6H12O6 + 6O2. Now the point is, if the equation in the question would have stated 12H2O as reactant then 6H2O should have included in the product. If the equation in the question lacks 6H2O in the product inspite of having 12H2O in the reactant, then the answer to the question would have been a product is missing. I hope it is clear now :-)
